Well-being and wellness are two buzz words on the HR landscape right now, with the two almost being used interchangeably. Traditionally, wellness is used to define physical health. However, we’re now starting to see a shift towards organizations focusing on well-being, which encompasses financial and emotional health combined with physical wellness. In fact, organizations are 2.5x’s more likely to be seen as high performing, should they implement a robust well-being program.

So, what has caused this dramatic change in the HR landscape?

One word: Millennials. Millennials are arguably the first generation to integrate ethics into their decision making. Before starting a new job, they want to know much more about the organization that they’re joining – they want to know about social impact, stresswork-life balance, as well as what are the growth opportunities?

But, it’s not just millennials who are challenging the status quo; organizations are becoming smarter. The realization that well-being is way more than meditation. In fact, well-being is organizations finally giving their employees that helping hand to bring balance back to their life.

Leaders are being trained in mental health; to be able to spot the signs early on and to be sensitive around employees exhibiting any signs. Gone are the days of leaders being less empathetic to get the job done. Instead, leaders are being encouraged to display empathy, mindfulness and instilling resilience across their teams.

Empathy in the workplace

Leaders are being encouraged to be more proactive with their employees toencourage compassion across their teams. A company who cares about its employees will retain talent, and if you’re not thinking about this now, you run the risk of falling behind in the next sevenyears.

Mindfulness in the workplace 

Mindfulness and well-being go hand in hand. It’s important to let your employees know that you really are focused on them, not just progression or their 9-5 activities, but them as people. Ask yourself the question ‘How would you feel as an employee if your leader was focused on you?’

Resilience in the workplace 

Previously, employers were focused on offering their employees ‘surviving stress’ techniques. We’re now seeing a shift from that, and instead, employers want their employees to build up resilience.
