Walk to Help the Planet

Published by: TELUS Health,

Walking, running or cycling are great alternative modes of transportation. Being physically active each day has proven to provide substantial health benefits.1 It’s also a great way to be kind to Mother Earth and connect with your surroundings.

Walk or cycle when you can to reduce your carbon footprint. Increased walking or use of a bicycle as a method of transport instead of a motorized vehicle means greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.2
Each 7 km by bicycle will save an emission of 1 kilogram of CO2 as compared to the same distance driven by a car.

Maintain physical activity every day. Getting outside ensures you’re getting the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity while also reducing the amount of energy you use in your home while you’re out. 3

Enjoy your surroundings. Map out a walk using mappedometer.com to figure out how far you’ve gone and to discover new walking trails in your area. Try not to drive to destinations that are close by; instead, discover the best routes to get there and walk or cycle instead.

Many studies have determined that walking and physical activity can lower your risk for diseases. By making more of an effort to stay healthy, you’ll likely rely less on healthcare, in turn also improving the planet’s health.4
