How does the EAP work?

Helping employees to deal with problems that could be affecting them both inside and outside of the workplace, the EAP initially works by providing a professional assessment of which kind of support the individual concerned would most benefit from.

Following this assessment, the employee may be referred to a counseling service, referred to another professional affiliate, and continue receiving the ongoing specialists support that they need to work through their difficulties.

What does the EAP offer?

The EAP  lets users utilize free counselling. Whether the participant’s mental health issue has resulted from a personal, family or workplace problem, the counselor can talk through the issue and refer them to other counselling professionals if necessary.

Is the EAP confidential?

EAP services are confidential. The EAP doesn’t let an employer or anyone else know that anybody has called unless consent and written permission have been given. No manager, supervisor, not even a partner or spouse is notified. The only exception to this rule of confidentiality is if the EAP consultant learns that someone is at risk of self-harm or of harming others. In this case, the consultant may be required to report the situation to the appropriate authorities.

Is the EAP easy to use?

Contacting the EAP is easy – all anybody has to do is simply call the toll-free telephone number. When your employees call the EAP, they must be prepared to give their name, address, and the name of your organization. Their name and any other identifying information will be kept confidential. Your employee’s name is important because it allows the EAP consultant to identify the specific type of service an employer is providing along with other important benefit-related information. Return calls can be arranged at the discretion of the employee. The EAP consultant will discuss their needs and concerns, listening to and professionally assessing the situation. Depending on their situation, the EAP consultant may:

  • work with your people and help them make a plan to resolve their issues or concerns
  • refer them to a support group
  • guide them to helpful resources in their community
  • refer them to a specialist or local counselor for ongoing counseling
  • help them navigate the EAP website for informative online content

Is the EAP free for employees?

The EAP service is provided at no cost to the employee. However, if an employee accepts a referral to services outside the EAP, you as the employer may be responsible for any associated costs. The EAP consultant will work with employees to find the most appropriate and cost-effective help to address their needs. Your employees can be reassured that if they are going through a difficult time, help is only ever a phone call away.
