In nuclear research, total well-being starts with safety

Published by: LifeWorks,

For award winning employer Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), total well-being starts with safety.

The 3,200 employees working across Canada investigate research of nuclear technology for medicine, biology and power generation use cases. Working conditions can be challenging and locations, such as the HQ at Chalk River in Ottawa, remote.

“We work with nuclear fuel and its experimental work, which means we handle radioactive material,” says Rosaura Ham-Su, Manager of Fuel Development at CNL. “When handling hazard materials you have to be calm and collected.”

According to Mark Lesinski, President and CEO of CNL, for the varied workforce, well-being starts with safety and employees have to be in tip-top shape and have a good work-life balance to be able to perform.

“In addition we’re currently undergoing a really big transition from a government owned to contractor owned operation. This is a big shift for people and adds stress to the workforce as there’s a little bit of the unknown for them,” he says.

For the past 13 years, LifeWorks by Morneau Shepell has helped Canadian Nuclear Laboratories provide the best well-being support for employees and their families.

“At any one time, in fuel development, I have one to four staff going through family assistance one way or another,” says Rosaura Ham-Su.

Over the last 12 months, LifeWorks by Morneau Shepell has helped reduce absenteeism by 41% and delivered over 4,500 hours of clinical support.
